Bovey Tracey ~ St Peter, St Paul and St Thomas the Beckett

In 1553 there were four bells and one small bell. This was sold to Woodbury near Exeter in 1881. At this time the bells were recast into a six (with the work actually being undertaken at Bovey Tracey ).

The current peal of bells are a complete Taylor 8 cast in 1902 and hung on two levels in a cast iron frame. They were re-hung by Gillett and Johnstone in 1935 and other than routine maintenece were not touched until 1999/2000 when they were extensively overhauled by Nicholsons of Bridport.

Bovey Tracey is often referred to as the gateway to the moors nestling on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It is a good spot to explore Dartmoor with a number of good pubs, hotels and guest houses and the like. If ringers are thinking about coming down this way then contact me and I can point you in the right direction with towers, accommodation and pubs. If you are in the area the pub that is used by the local ringers is the Bell Inn - good for beer. If you are after something a little more up market then try the Cromwell Arms, Dolphin or The Riverside. As well as the bells the church at Bovey Tracey is worth visiting for the beautiful chancel screen. By the way our practice night is Monday but ring first or e-mail me first. You can also find additional information on the Bovey Tracey Ringers website or the Church Website.
